YY had invited me for this evening to go with her boyfriend and another couple of friends to see a spectacular show at West Lake, called “Enduring Memories of Hangzhou” (previously called “Impressions of West Lake”) – a show that takes place on the lake itself, some of the stages being an inch or two below the surface of the water! This was another show created for G20 back in 2016, and it is designed by the same guy who designed the opening show of the London 2008 Olympic Games. In a sort of “East meets West” theme, it contained traditional Chinese pieces, and some western classical pieces, finishing with “Ode to Joy”, which was very moving.
The show is quite expensive, compared to other sights and shows in China, but with the number of people involved it can be seen why. The only really negative thing about it is with the audience, a number of whom walked about a lot and kept talking. I couldn’t help feeling that wouldn’t have happened, nor have been allowed, in an ordinary indoor theatre.
Anyway, if you are going to visit Hangzhou, this is definitely a must see. I was so glad that my friend had told me about it and invited me to it.
